Released in September 2012, and following on from the popular S100 the Canon PowerShot S110 brings improvements in performance, better image quality under a wider range of light conditions plus a touchscreen and wifi capabilities while still retaining a lot of the features that made its predecessor so popular, though at under $370 you currently pay around $100 more for it.

While simple enough for any user to be able to shoot beautiful images, the Canon PowerShot S110 12.1 MP Digital Camera is still a serious photographic tool and in the hands of advanced users and enthusiasts has the power to capture superb photos and video. Pros:
  • Great images yet true pocket-size
  • LCD touchscreen and wi-fi capability
Cons:
  • Only slightly better images than S100

Among the features packed into the compact, pocket-sized body, the 12-megapixel 1/1.7" High-Sensitivity CMOS image sensor works in conjunction with Canon's DIGIC 5 image processor, the 24 mm wide-angle lens with 5X optical zoom and High Speed AF (autofocus) to deliver excellent quality photos and videos and fast performance. Of particular note, the six available stabilization modes are automatically sensed and applied by the camera while shooting both photos and movies, keeping your shots steady even without a tripod. A generous, 3.0-inch capacitive, multitouch LCD touchscreen, similar to those found on smartphones and tablets, responds to one- and two- finger operations as well as swipes giving you easy, intuitive operation and clear playback viewing. If you prefer to use the shutter button, turn the "Touch Shutter" off using the option in the main menu and also adjust touch sensitivity. Still present in the Canon PowerShot S110 is Canon's innovative lens Control Ring, enabling settings adjustments of various functions by turning the selector ring at the base of the lens, a more intuitive method for experienced photographers.

Point-and-shoot user friendliness on the Canon PowerShot S110 is assisted by automatic face detection, motion detection and Smart Auto scene detection technologies. In particular, Smart Auto goes further than most to automatically choose the best settings for optimal image quality based on the target subjects and external factors. Providing point-and-shoot simplicity for beginners, the range of options on the mode dial allows newbies to progress outside their comfort-zone as they become more experienced, while advanced users can turn this feature off. A dedicated movie button is located in a handy spot in the thumb pad to easily start recording full HD 1080p video at 24 fps and stereo sound with stunning and realistic results. Canon's Fine Detail Movie Processing function gives you beautiful, high resolution videos with around four times the amount of information recorded during video shooting for better clarity and sharpness even in finer details. The full zoom range and continuous autofocus are available when videoing and a HDMI port lets you playback direct to a HDTV. There are even super slow motion options, 640 x 480 pixels at 120 fps and 320 x 240 pixels at 240 fps.

Another new feature the Canon PowerShot S110 has over its predecessor is built-in wi-fi so you can wirelessly transfer images to a PC and social networking sites by registering and using Canon Image Gateway (free) or the free Canon CameraWindow app on a suitable smartphone or tablet. You can also share images between other wi-fi PowerShot cameras or print directly to a wi-fi compatible printer. Another cool feature is that you can use wi- fi and your smartphone's GPS capability to record and tag your images with GPS data like latitude, longitude, altitude and the time the shot was taken.

In keeping with the Canon Powershot range of cameras, the Canon PowerShot S110 12.1 MP Digital Camera makes use of all their advanced technologies to make it easy for even novices to capture superb photos and video at the push of a button, yet with the power and flexibility to allow serious enthusiasts the ability to manually create there own standout images, a great buy at under $370.

However, if you are on a tight budget and don't need the touchscreen and wifi features you may want to grab a Canon PowerShot S100 12.1 MP Digital Camera instead while they're still around.
